MILWAUKEE - Marquette University head men's soccer coach Louis Bennett has announced that goalkeeper David Check has signed an acceptance of admission and will join the Golden Eagles' 2008 recruiting class.
"We are trying to build a goalkeeping stable that will enable each one of our goalkeepers to push each other," said Bennett. "David brings athleticism and ambition to our program."
Check, a 6-foot-0 incoming freshman from Mequon, Wis., led Homestead High School to a conference title in double overtime his senior year.
"David has no ceiling above him as far as potential. He is very fit and will clearly make our goalkeeping unit better from day one," Golden Eagles associate head coach Stan Anderson said. "He has been to my camp and has also personally trained with one of my camp colleagues. I enjoy the huge appetite for improvement he has. He reminds me of some keepers I have coached that have been quite successful in the college game."
In addition to playing with the Highlanders, Check also played under coach Sinisa Angelovski for the Mequon Soccer Club, which has produced five national team players, three All-Americans, 15 professional players, and three Major League Soccer players.
Check was a member of the Mequon Soccer Club in both 2007 and 2008. In his first year with the team, Check helped his club team to a second place finish in the premier league. A year later in 2008, Check's squad finished second in regional play.
Check was a tri-sport athlete in high school, competing in varsity track and baseball as well as soccer.
