MILWAUKEE -- Marquette men's soccer officially kicked off its 2008 fall season Friday as anticipation, technical drills and fitness exercises filled the first day of training camp at Valley Fields.
"We need to be game-ready and game-prepared," said head coach Louis Bennett, who is entering his third season at the helm of the Golden Eagles. "With the hard work and investment these players made in the spring, they will want to continue. It's getting into game mode as quickly as possible to get a handle on things."
Marquette will play a Blue vs. Gold intra-squad scrimmage as part of the 2nd Annual Fan Fest activities slated for Saturday, Aug. 16 at "The Valley". Free admission, food and games will start at 4:30 p.m. The men's scrimmage will be played under the lights following the women's exhibition match against Wisconsin at 5 p.m.
The Golden Eagles will then take to their home pitch again Sunday night, when they play their first exhibition match of the season. Marquette will host Cardinal Stritch at 7:05 p.m.
"We're going to hit the road running immediately through training, organizing and playing," Bennett said. "We will then re-evaluate on Monday whatever it is we need to do in terms of fitness."
Bennett expects his team to once again display a strong defensive edge, but will continue to work his players toward developing offensive flair -- something that takes solid team chemistry, which only comes as the result of practicing hard every day.
"We need to reach that level of understanding as it relates to technical and tactical awareness," Bennett said. ""This is going to be exciting, because we're going to see progress."
