MILWAUKEE -- Marquette follows up its impressive 4-1 season-opening vicotry Monday over Bryant with this weekend's Marquette Invitational. The Golden Eagles (1-0) will host Penn (0-0) on Friday night at 7:05 p.m. after DePaul (0-1) takes on Columbia (0-0) at Valley Fields at 5 p.m. Action will continue with two matches Sunday, Sept. 7, beginning at 11:05 a.m.
About the Marquette Golden Eagles
Head coach Louis Bennett is in his third season at Marquette after spending the previous 10 seasons as head coach at cross-town rival UW-Milwaukee where he helped UWM to a 136-63-17 record and five NCAA?Tournament appearances. Bennett has been rebuilding the Golden Eagles by recruiting top regional talent, many players whom are still in the early developmental stages of their respective careers. In all, Bennett welcomes eight juniors, seven sophomores and 12 freshmen to this year's squad. The roster's lone senior, Dan Addis, is sitting out the season due to injury.
Marquette Invitational
For the first time in Bennett's tenure as head coach, the men's soccer program will host the Marquette Invitational. This weekend's tournament will feature four matches, pitting two BIG EAST Conference members -- Marquette and DePaul -- against a pair of Ivy League schools -- Penn and Columbia. Each BIG EAST member will play each Ivy League school once, and all matches will be played at Valley Fields. In the two neutral contests, DePaul will face Columbia (Sept. 5 @ 5 p.m.) and Penn (Sept. 7 @ 11:05 a.m.).
Series Histories
This will be Marquette's first match up against both Penn and Columbia. Likewise, DePaul will be facing each Ivy League school for the first time in its program's history. The Golden Eagles are 22-2-1 all-time aganst their BIG EAST rival DePaul, though they will not go head-to-head this weekend. In fact, you have to go back to 2006 for for the last MU/DePaul match, which the Blue Demons won, 2-0. Marquette's season-opening 4-1 win over Bryant also marked the first time those two teams have met. The Golden Eagles will have familar opponents the remainder of the regular season.
Last Time Out
MU opened the 2008 season this past Monday at Valley Fields, defeating Bryant by a 4-1 final. Anthony Colaizzi tallied two goals and an assist. Both Hector Navarro and Matt Stummer also found the back of the net. Sam Etim and Tom Lynn each garnered an assist. MU out-shot Bryant, an NCAA Division II program transitioning into Division I affiliation, by a final of 16-5. Each team was called for 18 fouls. Bryant took three yellow cards and MU took one.
Addis To Miss '08 season
Dan Addis will sit out the season in 2008 due to injury. Addis was going to be the team's only rostered senior, but it was learned before the start of the preseason the Golden Eagles midfielder would be sidelined for the campaign. Addis' eight points (three goals, two assists) tied for the team lead and he was one of five MU players to play in all of the squad's 18 matches in 2007. He will return in 2009 to complete his senior season of eligibility.
Colaizzi's Quick Start
Sophomore Anthony Colaizzi netted two of the Golden Eagles' four goals and assisted Matt Stummer on another in MU's 4-1 season-opening win over Bryant. Colaizzi's five points were the most points by an individual in a single match since Chris Lee tallied six points in Marquette's 3-1 win over UW-Green Bay on Oct. 6, 2004. Colaizzi, a former Illinois State Player of the Year, accounted for just one assist in 17 games as a freshman.
Historic Offensive Outburst Against Bryant
Marquette's four goals in its 4-1 season-opening win over Bryant was the most goals scored in a single match by a Golden Eagles team since they defeated UW-Green Bay 4-1 back on Oct. 25, 2003. It was also the most goals netted by MU in a season-opener since a 5-1 decision over UW-Milwaukee to kick off the 2000 campaign.
Freshmen Seeing Time
Three freshmen started in Marquette's home opener against Bryant -- midfielder Amilcar Herrera and defenders Michael Alfano and Paul Monsen. Midfielder Calum Mallace also played in the match. Mallace had started at defender in Marquette's final exhbition match versus UW-Oshkosh.
Playing With Fire
Marquettte has several connections with the Chicago Fire of the MLS. Assistant Coach Steve Bode was a Fire draftee in 2008 and played in reserve matches for the squad. Also this past summer, junior Billy Von Rueden and sophomores Anthony Colaizzi and Sam Etim played with the Fire's PDL Super-20s team, helping them to a national title.
