MILWAUKEE - First-half goals from senior Kelly Wepking, sophomore Rachael Sloan and freshman Ashley Stemmeler gave the Marquette women's soccer team a 3-0 victory over Seton Hall Sunday afternoon at Valley Fields. With the win, the Golden Eagles improve to 8-4-1 overall, 2-2-1 in BIG EAST play, while the Pirates remain winless in league action, 0-4-1, and stand 4-7-1 overall.
"We have hoped for a win like this for a while because of the chances we create and we did so again today," said head coach Markus Roeders. "A lot of players were involved. Basically everyone who could play ended up playing. We have to be pleased. We finally earned the result we have been looking for based on our play, what we are trying to do and opportunities we are creating. I am happy with our team and all of the players deserve credit whether or not they were directly involved with the goals or assists. It is definitely a positive to build upon after Friday. I thought we had a very nice performance this afternoon."
Marquette first found the back of the net during the 14th minute of play when Sloan received a ball inside the 18-yard box from junior Lauren Thut. Sloan beat a defender to find herself one-on-one with Seton Hall goalkeeper Jennifer Pettigrew. Sloan quickly maneuvered around Pettigrew and blasted a shot into the far post from eight yards out.
Marquette went ahead 2-0 and Thut earned her second assist on the game at the 35:13 mark, when she served a free kick to Kelly Wepking, who was positioned seven yards in front of the goal. Wepking got her head on the ball and knocked it in near post for her first goal of the season.
Stemmeler scored her first career goal and the third and final goal of the game with just under seven minutes remaining in the first half. Stemmeler's chip past Pettigrew made her the 11th Golden Eagle to register a goal this season.
The Golden Eagles continued its barrage of shots in the second half and saw multiple opportunities to score with Ally Miller, Lindsey Page, Lauren Thut and Stephanie Vasos each putting shots on target.
The Marquette offense out-shot the Pirates 21-7. Sophomore goalkeeper Natalie Kulla finished with a clean sheet, her eighth of the season, and made one save.
The Golden Eagles will return to action Friday, Oct. 9 at 7 p.m., to take on Connecticut at Valley Fields.
