LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The Marquette University women's volleyball team was swept in three very close sets by Louisville Sunday afternoon, 3-0 (27-25, 25-23, 25-23).
Sophomore Ashley Beyer led the Golden Eagles (15-11, 4-7 BIG EAST) with 12 kills, while freshman Danielle Carlson also reached double figures with 11 kills. Beyer and Carlson each recorded only two errors on the day, as did junior Rabbecka Gonyo who landed seven kills and registered three blocks.\
Marquette pulled out to a 4-0 lead in the match's opening set off a block by Gonyo and sophomore Ciara Jones. MU would then extend its lead to seven points at 16-9 on a kill from Jones before Louisville responded to close the gap. The Cardinals took their first lead of the set at 23-22 and pulled out the victory 27-25.
The two squads exchanged the lead early in the second with MU holding an 8-6 advantage before an 8-1 Louisville run put UL up 14-9. One of Beyer's three service aces on the day put MU ahead 18-17 for its last lead of the set. The Cardinals then closed things out in the second 25-23.
The lead was exchanged seven times in the third set, but as the first and second frames showed, the Golden Eagles could not hold off the Cardinals. After the score was tied at every point from 9-9 to 18-18, the Golden Eagles pulled ahead 19-18 and led until a service ace by Lola Arslanbekova tied the set back up at 22-22. A kill from Beyer gave MU the 23-22 advantage, but the Golden Eagles were unable to extend the match, losing 25-23 in the third.
The Cardinals (14-9, 6-3 BIG EAST) were led by Arslanbekova's 21 kills on 43 total attacks.
The Golden Eagles return to the Al McGuire Center for a pair of home matches next weekend. MU will take on BIG EAST leader Notre Dame Friday at 7 p.m. on Sports32 and DePaul Sunday at 1 p.m.
