Golden Eagles Top St. Francis In Season Opener, 74-38

MILWAUKEE - The Marquette University women's basketball team defeated St. Francis (Pa.) 74-38 Saturday afternoon at the Al McGuire Center.
Senior Lauren Thomas-Johnson led the Golden Eagles (1-0) with 14 points, while Jocelyn Mellen added 10 of her own. MU also received solid production from the rest of its roster, as every player who saw action contributed at least four points.
Junior Angel Robinson had a solid all-around game, scoring eight points and grabbing nine rebounds, while dishing out five assists. Robinson also had four steals
The 38 points allowed is the lowest point total MU has given up since it beat Toledo 67-28 on Nov. 24, 2004
After allowing the Red Flash to open the second half with a basket, MU reeled off 16 of the next 18 points, including 12 straight, to take a 52-24 lead, and put the game out of reach. In the second half, MU connected on 14-of-27 from the floor and outscored St. Francis 40-19.
The Red Flash (0-1) shot 6-of-31 (19.4 percent) in the second half to seal its fate, while three of those field goals came in the last two minutes of the game.
Marquette took its first lead of the contest at 12-10 in the midst of a 9-0 run for the Golden Eagles. The Red Flash held its last lead of the contest at 10-8.
Thomas-Johnson scored all seven of her first half points on three-straight possessions pushing the MU lead to 26-14.
A Courtney Weibel 3-pointer from the right corner with three seconds remaining in the first half upped the MU advantage to 34-19 at the half.
For the contest, MU outscored St. Francis 44-16 in the paint.
Britney Hodges led St. Francis with eight points.
The Golden Eagles return to action Monday at 6:30 p.m. Eastern Time/ 5:30 p.m. Central Time against the University of Michigan. The game will be televised on the Big Ten Network.
