Men's Soccer To Open Spring Season March 7

MILWAUKEE, Wis. - Having already endured five weeks of indoor and outdoor training this offseason, members of the Marquette men's soccer team eagerly anticipate the rigors of its upcoming 2009 spring exhibition season.
Marquette will again kick off its spring exhibition slate with a trip to Southern Florida where the Golden Eagles will play at the University of Tampa and at Saint Leo University on March 7.
March 21 will mark the annual Blue vs. Gold scrimmage at Valley Fields. MU then travels to Faribault, Minn., to go head-to-head on March 29 with the Minnesota Thunder of the USL First Division followed by an afternoon contest with Graceland University.
Marquette returns to its home pitch on April 4 to host a doubleheader with UW-Parkside and Milwaukee. Marquette's spring contest versus the Panthers with be the fourth annual Bobby Summy Memorial game played between the two Milwaukee schools.
UW-Whitewater and UIC come to town for another doubleheader on April 18.
The spring season culminates with another Marquette tradition on April 25, the Wisconsin Spring Cup, an annual tournament featuring all four of the state's NCAA Division I men's soccer programs including Milwaukee, UW-Green Bay and Wisconsin.
According to head coach Louis Bennett, the Golden Eagles will feature a split squad when there is more than one game scheduled on a date of competition, allowing every player the ability to showcase their improvement.
"After five weeks of preseason, including some great work with strength coach Rudy Thomas, as well as skills sessions, futsal and snow workouts, all the lads are anxious to see the translation of their endeavors onto the full field," said Bennett. "Opening up the season with a trip to Florida, and closing with the Wisconsin Spring Cup, should make for an exciting and testing spring."
