EL PASO, Texas -- The Marquette University track and field squad competed Saturday afternoon at the UTEP Springtime Invitational.
Jessica Ehlen highlighted the day for the Golden Eagles, winning the discus with a throw of 47.29 meters (155-02) to set a personal record and record a BIG EAST qualifying distance. Ehlen's throw came up just short of the NCAA qualifying distance of 47.30 meters.
"Jessi performed very well today and showed great consistency in the hammer throw and the discus," associate head coach Mike Koenning said. "Coming up just short of the NCAA mark was heart breaking but I believe it will provide extra motivation for her as the season continues."
Kelley Corcoran finished fourth in the hammer throw, reaching a distance of 47.78 meters (156-09), while Jamie Roth placed 10th in the event.
Corcoran also registered a throw of 11.48 meters to finish 10th in the shot put and Rachel Thiel failed to record a distance in the event with fouls on her first three heaves.
In the triple jump, Alyssa Davis recorded a BIG EAST qualifying distance and set a personal record with a leap of 11.95 meters (39-02.50) to finish second.
Liz Wilkie reached a height of 3.40 meters (11-01.75) in the pole vault to finish tied for second, while freshman Lauren Darnall finished right behind with a height of 3.25 meters (10-8.00).
Marquette athletes finished 4-7 in the javelin with Kelly Magennis' 39.00 meters (127-11) leading Catherine Benage, Audra Ketelsen and Lauren Benjamin. Magennis and Benage both reached BIG EAST marks in the event.
Co-captain Jeff Kluge recorded a throw of 55.16 meters (181-00) in the hammer throw to finish third, placing behind two athletes who recorded NCAA Regional qualifying marks. The distance was a personal record for Kluge.
In the discus, Marquette came out holding spots 4-6, led by senior Michael Heim with a distance of 43.86 meters (143-11). David Carbajal and Jeff Kluge placed right behind Heim in the event. Heim and Carbajal both recorded BIG EAST distances.
Nick Van Deraa took second in the pole vault with a vault of 4.55 meters (14-11.00) to reach a BIG EAST qualifying height.
