The Marquette men's soccer team easily handled Kentucky, 4-2, in their final exhibition match of preseason on Friday afternoon at Valley Fields.
The Golden Eagles finished regulation leading 4-2, and a mutually agreed upon 30 minute period of extra time saw no additional scoring. The host Marquette team led the game in nearly every statistic, including shots and corner kicks.
A stifling MU defense allowed two goals, and only needed to register one save during the 120 minutes of play. Kentucky opened scoring with a goal in the ninth minute. Wildcat freshman Matt Lodge carried the ball through traffic and fired a shot from 30 yards out, beating senior goalkeeper Matt Pyzdrowski to the far post.
Marquette quickly pressured the Wildcats' defense, and netted an equalizer. In the 14th minute, sophomore Calum Mallace crossed the ball to sophomore Amilcar Herrara, but Kentucky junior Josh McCrary's attempt to clear the cross put the ball in the back of the net off a diving header for an own goal.
Redshirt sophomore defender Scott Miller put the Golden Eagles ahead, 2-1, with an unassisted shot from 25 yards out in the 22nd minute.
Marquette led 2-1 at halftime, outshooting Kentucky 5-1 and forcing UK senior goalkeeper Dan Williams to make two saves in the first half. Pyzdrowski did not have to make a save in the first half, and the defense allowed only one Wildcat shot in the first 45 minutes.
Sophomore Chris Madsen netted the third goal of the game for the Golden Eagles two minutes into the second half. The sophomore received a punt from Pyzdrowski and volleyed the ball into the back of the net.
Kentucky got a break on a foul in the box by a Marquette player, allowing senior Jason Griffiths to capitalize on the opportunity and knock the penalty kick past a diving Pyzdrowski, bringing Kentucky within one goal of MU, 3-2
Freshman Anthony Selvaggi scored the final goal of the game in the 79th minute, putting the Golden Eagles ahead, 4-2. Miller's header rebounded to Selvaggi, who blasted a shot in the box past the UK defense. Less than a minute later, the freshman almost netted a second but his point blank shot was high.
The two teams played another thirty minute period following the two 45-minute halves. Both teams changed goalkeepers, allowing MU sophomore David Check and UK redshirt freshman Joseph Peglow and freshman Kevin Corby chances in the net.
Marquette's offensive pressure throughout the game was evident, as they outshot Kentucky 13-5 and dominated corner kicks, 10-5. The lone save for the Golden Eagles was made by Check in the overtime period when a hard shot by Kentucky junior Drew Midkiff forced the sophomore to make a diving stop.
The Golden Eagles will take start their regular season on Tuesday night when the squad hosts UW-Milwaukee in the Milwaukee Cup. Kickoff at Valley Fields is slotted for 7:05 p.m. on Sept. 1.
