MILWAUKEE - The Marquette University men's and women's track and field squads return to action Friday and Saturday at the Indiana Relays in Bloomington, Ind.
"This will be a good, competitive meet across the board," head track and field coach Bert Rogers said. "It is a fast track and we are looking for some good performances."
Friday's events are scheduled to begin at 3 p.m. Eastern Time with the preliminary heats of the women's 60-meter hurdles and will conclude around 8:45 p.m. following the men's distance medley relay. Saturday's events will begin at 10:30 a.m. and continue after the men's 1,600-meter relay at 4:50 p.m. The meet will feature Marquette, Notre Dame, Indiana, DePaul, Toledo and Mississippi State, among others.
Freshman Kyle Winter, the hero of last weekend's dual meet victory over the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee will look to qualify for the 2010 BIG EAST Indoor Championships in the 800-meter run. Winter is also in the pool for the distance medley and 1,600-meter relays.
"Kyle will step up to the 800, which is really his bread and butter event. So it will be his first time really getting after it this year," Rogers said.
Winter won the 600-meter run by six-hundredths of a second at UWM and ran the anchor leg of the 1,600-meter relay to seal the meet victory for the men.
Sophomore Jack Hackett will look to top his season-best time of 4:12.54 in the mile after helping pace the MU men last weekend. Also competing in the mile is the UWM dual meet champion in the event, sophomore Blake Johnson.
Junior Tyler O'Brien will get back after a lower body injury forced him to miss last weekend's meet. O'Brien is scheduled to run in the 200- and 400-meter dashes and is also in the pool for the 1,600-meter relay.
"Tyler had a little ding last week and it didn't make sense for him to try to push it. I am looking forward to seeing him in the 200 and 400 and we will try to get him back to form," Rogers said.
On the women's side, senior Jayne Grebinski returns in the mile after winning the UWM meet and is also among a group in the distance medley and 1,600-meter relay pools.
Junior Olivia Johnson, the 3,000-meter run winner last weekend, is scheduled to run in the 800 meters, an event in which she holds the 10th-best time in Marquette history.
After competing in each of the previous four meets, the Marquette throwers will get the weekend off from competition.
