Marquette Falls to DePaul 72-63

MILWAUKEE - The Marquette University women's basketball team was unable to withstand a hot-shooting DePaul squad in the second half Saturday afternoon, falling to the Blue Demons, 72-63, at the Al McGuire Center.
The loss drops the Golden Eagles to 14-12 overall and 5-8 in the BIG EAST Conference, while DePaul improves to 17-10 overall and 6-7 in conference play.
Angel Robinson and Lauren Thomas-Johnson led Marquette with 13 points each, while Paige Fiedorowicz added 10 points off the bench.
Out of the intermission the Blue Demons jumped on Marquette and would not relent, scoring eight of the first nine points of the second half to take a 40-36 lead.
Marquette was able to pull the score even at 49-49 with five straight points from Robinson, but could not get any closer. DePaul pulled away to take its largest lead at 72-61 with just over a minute to play.
After shooting 44.1 percent (15-of-34) in the first half, DePaul shot 55.6 percent (15-of-27) from the floor in the second half, leading to 40 second half points.
Early in the first, MU jumped out a 8-2 lead on back-to-back three-pointers from Weibel and built its lead to 10 points at 23-13 following a 13-2 run. The Blue Demons fought back the remainder of the half and pulled to within a point at 33-32 on a Katherine Harry jumper with time expiring.
Thomas-Johnson led Marquette with nine first-half points, including a pair of treys, while Courtney Weibel also made a couple 3-pointers early in the half. The Golden Eagles held a 17-2 advantage in fast-break points, heading into the half.
The Golden Eagles hosted their fifth annual "Pink Out" Saturday afternoon in conjunction with the WBCA's Pink Zone initiative, in support of breast cancer awareness.
Jennifer Juergens led DePaul with 16 points off the bench.
Marquette returns to action Tues., Feb. 23 at Notre Dame at 6 p.m.
