MILWAUKEE - The Marquette women's soccer team opened up the 2010 spring season with its seventh annual Tournament of Friends Sunday at the Marquette Gym. The Tournament of Friends featured two Marquette teams of current players: a Marquette Blue team and Marquette Gold team, an alumni team, Wis.-Whitewater and the Marquette Club team. The tournament games were small-sided; four field players and a goalkeeper.
"It was a great day for our 'Family'," said head coach Markus Roeders. "We had outstanding competition and it ended up being a lot of fun. Our team accomplished its goal by having both squads compete in the final. We improved throughout the day and it ended up being a nice ending to our indoor training this spring. Many thanks to UW-Whitewater and the Marquette Club team for participating, they played at a high level throughout the day."
"One of the highlights was the turnout and play by our alumni. Their support, commitment and connection to the program is stronger than ever and what we call the 'Marquette Family' is alive and well, and growing stronger all the time. The alumni attendees covered the past 14 years of our program and it brought back many wonderful memories for all of us. Today was what our program is all about - 'tradition, pride, excellence, family and a winning tradition.' Everybody had a great time."
Marquette Blue captured the championship with a 3-1 win over Marquette Gold. Junior Stephanie Vasos scored the first goal for the Blue team at the 14:03 mark. Freshman Rachel Brown followed with back-to-back goals for the Blue team, including what turned out to be the game winner. Junior Julia Victor scored the Gold team's lone goal in the final with 5:07 to play.
The championship match between the Marquette Blue and Marquette Gold teams marked the seventh consecutive year the two teams met in the final. It was also a rematch of the first game of the day that finished with the Blue team on top, 6-1.
The Marquette Blue team defeated the Marquette Club team, 12-1 in the first semifinal, while the Marquette Gold team snuck past the MU Alumni, 2-1, in overtime.
Brown (MU Blue) led all scorers with 10 goals. Rosie Malone-Povolny (MU Blue), Rachael Sloan (MU Blue) and Lindsey Page (MU Gold) followed with seven goals apiece, and Ashley Bares (MU Gold) added five goals.
Alumni in attendance included Ashley Baird, Katie Bissen, Jess Taylor, Laura Culhane, Michelle Martin, Anne Ioder, Kristen Jensen, Melissa Moffatt, Lindsay Smale, Claire Weber, Erin Morgan, Becky LaBarge, Brittany Bares, Anna Sawicki, Allison Mallams, Allison McBride, Michelle Compty, Christy Zwolski, Kelly Wepking, Heather Goranson, Jaime Erickson, Jenny Strachota, Kelly Roethe, Elizabeth Angel, Katie Miller and Annie Dalecky.
