MILWAUKEE - The Marquette University men's soccer team continues its spring season Saturday with an exhibition match against Northern Illinois. Kick off versus the Huskies is set for 7:05 p.m.
NIU should provide a spirited test for the Golden Eagles, who own a 3-1 record thus far during the 2010 spring campaign. The Huskies have won at least 10 games in each of the past five regular seasons, including a 10-8-1 mark in 2009.
MU's lone loss this spring was a 3-0 setback to the NSC Stars, a professional club team based in Blaine, Minnesota. But the Golden Eagles rebounded last weekend with a 3-1 win over UW-Parkside and 1-0 decision against UW-Whitewater.
Weekend Rewind
Following a scoreless first half, Marquette scored three unanswered goals after trailing 1-0 to defeat UW-Parkside on Saturday, April 10.
Freshman Andrew Krynski leveled thematch with a goal from 23 yards out and a corner kick from junior Anthony Colaizzi found sophomore Michael Alfano at the back post for the game-winning header. Anthony Selvaggi tacked on the Golden Eagles' third goal, assisted by junior Hector Navarro.
"With a score tally that may have flattered our quality a little, I am happy about the team's ability to bend, not break, and come back from an early deficit," said Marquette head men's soccer coach Louis Bennett."
Later in the day, sophomore Calum Mallace deposited a signature free kick into the back of the UW-Whitewater net moments before intermission to help seal a 1-0 victory for MU.
Mallace, who has played in the central midfield since his arrival to Marquette, played out of position (right halfback) last Saturday as Bennett was without a number of key players due to injury.
A Look Ahead...
Following an alumni match at Valley Fields on Sunday, April 18 (1 p.m.), Marquette will look forward to hosting the Wisconsin D1 Spring Cup, an annual tournament at Valley Fields that features all of the NCAA Division I men's soccer programs in the state - Marquette, Wisconsin, Milwaukee and UW-Green Bay.
This year's event is scheduled for Sunday, April 25. Action gets underway at 9:30 a.m. between Wisconsin and UWGB followed by Marquette vs. Milwaukee in the annual Bob Summy Memorial match at 10 a.m.
Losers of the first two matches will then go head-to-head to determine third place at 1:30 p.m. while the championship match between to two winning teams will be played at 2 p.m.
All matches during the Wisconsin DI Spring Cub will be 70 minutes (35-minute intervals). Both the artificial turf practice field and game pitch will be utilized at Valley Fields in order to accommodate all four teams. There is no cost for admission.
