MILWAUKEE - Marquette University head men's soccer coach Louis Bennett has announced the team's schedule for the upcoming 2010 fall season. The slate is highlighted by nine home contests as well as nine games against BIG EAST Conference teams.
"It is a schedule that any top college player would get excited about," said Bennett. "It's obviously going to be challenging, especially since BIG EAST road games are some of the toughest in the country. We also have a good balance of non-conference games, both home and away, that will test our players and keep them sharp throughout the season."
Bennett's squad will open exhibition play with the annual Blue vs. Gold match on Tuesday, Aug. 17. The Golden Eagles then co-host the annual Fan Fest celebration with MU women's soccer team on Friday, Aug. 20 at Valley Fields. Festivities will begin at 5 p.m. are are free to the public. All are invited.
Marquette welcomes UW-Whitewater on Aug. 21. Exhibition play will be capped off by a home match against UW-Parkside (Aug. 24) and conclude on Friday, Aug. 27 at Kentucky.
The 2010 regular season begins Sept. 1 with the historic Milwaukee Cup. The Golden Eagles will be looking to hoist the Cup for the third straight year when they travel across town to face the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee in the annual derby.
Marquette then heads to Western Illinois (Sept. 5) before returning home to host the third annual Marquette Invitational. This year's tournament will feature Santa Clara, Valparaiso, and Florida Gulf Coast. MU will face Florida Gulf Coast in the nightcap on Sept. 10 and then play Santa Clara in the early game on Sept. 12.
The Golden Eagles then play three of their next four games against Big Ten Conference opponents with tilts at Michigan State (Sept. 17) and home against Michigan (Sept. 19). MU will also face in-state rival Wisconsin as the Badgers make their return visit to Valley Fields on Sept. 28.
"Our in-state games are exciting and always a challenge, and our Big Ten matchups against Michigan and Michigan State will give us those early tests before we get into the heart of the BIG EAST schedule," said Bennett.
Bennett's squad will travel to Rutgers on Friday, Sept. 24. Marquette's first conference home game comes when Connecticut travels to Milwaukee on Friday, Oct 1. Following the matchup with the Huskies, MU will host three additional BIG EAST teams - Syracuse (Oct. 16), Providence (Oct. 20) and Seton Hall (Oct. 30).
Marquette will play back-to-back road contests at Pittsburgh (Oct. 9) and at Notre Dame (Oct. 13), followed by matches at Georgetown (Oct. 23) and at West Virginia (Oct. 27) later in the month.
"Each and every game will have to be taken as a separate and individual event and challenge," said Bennett. It is an appropriate schedule for where we see ourselves and it's definitely a set of exciting games for MU fans, students and soccer nuts in the community."
