ST. PAUL, Minn. -
The Marquette University women's soccer team suffered its second straight overtime loss Friday afternoon as No. 14/21 San Diego topped the Golden Eagles, 1-0, in the first game of the Minnesota Gold Classic. Brittany Held scored the game-winning goal in the 99th minute for the Toreros.
Held launched her shot from 18-yards out near the end line. The ball sailed across the goalmouth, hit the far post and in the back of the net at the 98:07 mark.
The win keeps San Diego undefeated at 4-0-0, while the Golden Eagles fall to 2-2-1 overall.
"Beside winning the game and scoring a goal, we were outstanding tonight," said head coach Markus Roeders. "We did everything but score, and their goalkeeper came up with several excellent saves. I don't think luck has much to do with it, but when you it the crossbar and for another chance the ball bounces inside the post, across the goal line and then out off the other post, it is more than unfortunate. We just need to regroup and get ready for Sunday. This game goes in the loss column, but it was one of the best matches a Marquette team has played in many, many years. We will keep working hard and may teak a few things to be even more effective on both ends of the field. I know those goals will come soon."
It was a frustrating loss for the Golden Eagles as it dominated possession, put nine shots on goal in the first half and four in the second half.
For the game, the Golden Eagles out-shot San Diego, 27-7 and put 13 of those attempts on goal. All 13 of Marquette's shots on goal proved to be unlucky as San Diego's keeper Courtney Parsons was credited with 12 saves and the Toreros registered one team save. Natalie Kulla played the entire 98:07 in net and stopped three shots.
One of MU's best chances in the first half came in the 36th minute when Thut served the ball in to Lisa Philbin who headed the it toward the far post. Philbin's ball hit the far post, bounced off the near post and was saved by Parsons.
Rachael Sloan had a 1v1 opportunity in the 52nd minute, however Parsons got to the ball denying Sloan of any shot. Sloan followed that up by beating two San Diego defenders in the 61st minute, but was but was unlucky with her finish as Natalie Garcia was there to knock her ball out of play before it crossed the goal line.
Rosie Malone-Povolny put a beautiful shot on that Parsons had to punch up and over the goal in the 77th minute. On the ensuing corner kick, Kerry McBride's header also nicked the crossbar and over the goal.
The Golden Eagles will close out play at the Minnesota Gold Classic Sunday against UC Santa Barbara at Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium at 10:30 a.m. Live stats will be available courtesy of www.gogophersports.com.
