MILWAUKEE - The Marquette University men's and women's track and field teams will head across town to take on the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee in dual meet action Saturday morning at the Klotsche Center. The meet will begin at 10 a.m. with the men's shot put and high jump and the women's long jump and pole vault. The track events will follow at approximately 12:30 p.m. with the women's 60-meter hurdles.
"This meet is nice for us to do early in the season because it is fun to do a dual meet for team-building," Marquette head track and field coach Bert Rogers said. "A lot of our meets don't have that team scoring component outside of the conference meet, so it is a neat environment that is good for us this time of the year."
After a successful 2010 indoor season in the mile, the men will finally get another shot to see how close to the school record (4:03.00) they can get. Junior Jack Hackett returns after notching the fifth-fastest time (4:08.97) in school history in 2010, while classmate Blake Johnson is sixth all-time at MU with a time of 4:09.47. Jack Senefeld, Spencer Agnew and Patrick Maag all posted solid times in 2010 and should challenge the 4:10-mark at some point during the season.
"Sometimes these dual meets can tend to be a little more tactical in order to win the race, but I think the mile runners will really get after it and see how fast they can run," Rogers said. "The Milwaukee facility is a tight track but the surface is fast so I think the opportunity is there to put down some good times. It will definitely to be one of the events we are looking forward to seeing."
Freshman Carlye Schuh will be very valuable on Saturday as the Appleton, Wis., native will compete in the long jump, 60-meter dash in addition to her career debut in the high jump. Schuh set a freshman record in the long jump (18 feet, 6 inches) at the Notre Dame Blue and Gold Invitational on Dec. 3 and will be back in action in that event for the first time since December.
"Carlye is really talented but she has really been working on her technique lately," Rogers said. "I think Coach (Nick) Davis has made some strides with her in practice and Milwaukee is a pretty nice place to jump. It is a fast surface and seems like it has a little bit of a bounce to it. I think she is going to contend to win both the high jump and the long jump."
Joining Schuh in the 60 meters will be Milwaukee natives Chanel Franklin and Cashay Harris, who are sixth (7.80 seconds) and eighth (8.00 seconds) in school history, respectively. Franklin has already qualified for the BIG EAST Indoor Championships, but Harris and Schuh will both try to better the qualifying time of 7.85 seconds.
Junior Lauren Darnall will also return to action in the pole vault and will look to continue working towards an NCAA mark as she improves upon her school record.
"Lauren was a little rusty last week, coming back over break," Rogers said. "I was watching practice Tuesday night and it looked like she got her speed back and I expect her to jump well again. She is trying to challenge 13 feet this weekend."
Both the men's and women's 4x400-meter relays will be intriguing events as Rogers attempts to sort out his best chance for victory from a pool of talented runners. The 2010 indoor meet at Milwaukee came down to then-freshman Kyle Winter's anchor leg of the 4x400-meter relay as the MU men pulled out a 70-68 victory.
The Golden Eagles also took on the Panthers in dual meet action twice during 2010, once during the indoor season at Milwaukee and once outdoors at Marquette. The Marquette men won both of the dual meets, while the women dropped both match-ups with Milwaukee.
Marquette head coach Bert Rogers and assistant coach Nick Davis both graduated from Milwaukee and starred for the Panther track and field squad.
