MILWAUKEE -- If you've already received your 2011 Marquette University men's soccer schedule poster, you may have noticed a slight change to the UW-Parkside exhibition match than what was originally posted online.
MU will now will play its final exhibition match of the 2011 preseason at UW-Parkside on Saturday, Aug. 20. The match was originally slated to be played at Valley Fields.
Kick off against the Rangers at Wood Road Soccer Field in Kenosha, Wis., has also been moved up to 1 p.m. CT to coincide with an event recognizing Rick Kilps, who announced his retirement earlier this year after 27 seasons as the UW-Parkside head coach.
"Going down there is a great way to honor Coach Kilps," said MU head coach Louis Bennett. "We admire the longevity and quality of what he has done -- not only for UW-Parkside, but for soccer in this area, regionally and nationally."
Kilps ranks fourth all-time in career victories in NCAA Division II, compiling a 363-135-38 record during his tenure at UWP. This past March, he was inducted into the Wisconsin Soccer Coaches Association Hall of Fame, where he was presented by former UW-Parkside All-American and current Marquette University associate head coach Stan Anderson.
"Coach Kilps ran a tight ship at Parkside and every year he produced," said Anderson. "It's not easy to win and win consistently, yet he did. I am grateful for the time and energy he spent in helping me improve. He has left a legacy at Parkside. I'm looking forward to facing them at UWP on this special day."
"The soccer family is so close knit in Wisconsin and everyone knows who coach Kilps is," added Bennett. "He has earned respect from the soccer community by inspiring and mentoring young coaches. I feel honored to have had the chance to compete against him and use him as a soundboard for my own coaching career."
