MILWAUKEE - The Marquette University men's soccer team, which will celebrate its 50th year of competition this fall, released its 2014 schedule Thursday.
Highlighted by matches against each of the previous two national champions to kick off the season, the Golden Eagles' schedule features a total 17 regular season games, 10 of which will be played at Valley Fields.
The team's annual Fan Fest is scheduled for Thursday, Aug. 14. Two days later, Marquette hosts Tulsa for its preseason opener at Valley Fields. On Aug. 22, the Golden Eagles will travel to Fort Wayne, Indiana, to take on Ohio State in the Shindigz National Soccer Festival before returning home for their final preseason tune-up against Wright State on Aug. 24.
MU has a pair of tough regular season matchups right out of the gates, as it takes on defending national champion Notre Dame followed by the host Indiana Hoosiers, the 2012 national champions, as part of the adidas/IU Credit Union Classic on Aug. 29 and Aug. 31, respectively.
"This is probably the most challenging schedule Marquette soccer has ever had," said head coach Louis Bennett. "We're opening up with the national champions, then we're going to play the champions from a couple of years ago. Notre Dame and Indiana are the first two games we play."
Following the season-opening tournament, Marquette will play six of its next seven games at Valley Fields to close out its non-conference schedule. Pacific Northwest opponents Gonzaga and Oregon State will play at Valley Fields as part of the annual Panther Invitational on Sept. 5 and 7, followed by another home tilt with Drake on Sept. 13.
Marquette will then close out a four-game home stand with a match against the crosstown Milwaukee Panthers at Valley Fields on Sept. 17 for the right to hoist the Milwaukee Cup. Their meeting will be the 42nd installation of a rivalry considered to be one of the 10 best in college soccer, according to College Soccer News.
