MU opens the tournament against last year's national title winner and former BIG EAST Conference rival, top-ranked Notre Dame, at 4 p.m. Central time before playing tournament host Indiana, the 2012 national champion, on Sunday, Aug. 31, at 2:30 p.m. Central time.
Friday's match against the Fighting Irish will present a historic opportunity for the Golden Eagles, as it will be the first time in program history that Marquette will face a team ranked No. 1. The highest ranked team Marquette has ever defeated was the No. 2-ranked University of Connecticut on Oct. 6, 2012 at Valley Fields, 3-2.
Marquette is coming off arguably its most successful season on the pitch. In 2013, the Golden Eagles claimed their second BIG EAST Conference championship in three years. MU (13-6-2) went on to win its first-ever BIG EAST tournament title en route advancing to the NCAA?Round of 16 for the first time in program history.
Last season, Notre Dame finished with a 17-1-6 record and defeated Maryland 2-1 in the final of the 2013 NCAA?Division I?Men's Soccer College Cup. It was Notre?Dame's first national championship in men's soccer.
