MILWAUKEE -- The Marquette University women's basketball team collectively shot 56 percent from the field and earned a 91-53 victory over Butler at the Al McGuire Center on Sunday afternoon.
Sophomore Allazia Blockton led all scorers with 20 points on 8-of-15 shooting. The Milwaukee native also notched four assists and grabbed three rebounds. Senior McKayla Yentz followed Blockton's performance by scoring 15 points on 5-of-6 shooting from beyond the arc. Marquette (15-4, 6-2) was also helped by sophomore Erika Davenport, who posted her eleventh double-double of the season with 14 points and 12 rebounds. The 11 double-doubles leads all players in the BIG EAST.
Butler (5-13, 2-5) faced an early 12-2 run by the Golden Eagles and suffered a 15-point deficit after the first period. Marquette shot 53 percent (9-of-17) from the field and connected on four 3-pointers in the first frame. The gritty defense was also a major factor as the Golden Eagles forced three turnovers and held the Bulldogs to just 2-of-17 (12%) shooting.
Marquette maintained its offensive consistency in the second quarter and extended the lead to 44-25 at halftime. The Golden Eagles registered 21 points in the second frame and ended the opening half shooting 18-of-29 (62%) from the field. Yentz helped the Golden Eagles get off on the right foot as she did not miss from beyond arc. She was a perfect 4-of-4 from downtown and led all scorers at half with 12 points.
The Golden Eagles continued to play well on both ends of the floor entering the second half. Butler was faced with a relentless defense and was held to 3-of-17 (18%) in the third frame. Marquette led by as many as 40 points in the fourth quarter.
The Bulldogs were led in scoring by junior Sydney Buck, who tallied nine points.
The Golden Eagles will begin a three-game road trip beginning on Saturday, January 21 at DePaul. The contest is slated for 7 p.m. Central time and will air on the BIG EAST Digital Network.
