
Marquette Falls 3-2 at Villanova

VILLANOVA, Pa. -- An eight-match win-streak was snapped as the Marquette University women's volleyball team fell 3-2 (22-25, 25-15, 25-21, 20-25, 9-15) at Villanova on Saturday afternoon at Jake Nevin Fieldhouse.
Sophomore Allie Barber paced the Golden Eagles (13-6, 7-1) with 25 kills and hit .373, while Anna Haak recorded a new career-high 19 kills and tallied her third double-double of the season with 11 digs, also adding five blocks.
Sophomore setter Lauren Speckman recorded her fourth double-double of the season dishing out 57 assists with 15 digs. Freshmen Maratha Konovodoff and Hope Werch also tallied double digit kills with 18 and 11 digs, respectively.
As a team MU combined for 10 blocks with freshman Elizabeth Orf putting up six.
Marquette fell in the first set, 25-22 despite hitting .351 in the frame. In the second set the Golden Eagles responded and after trailing 8-3-4, went on a 9-3 run to take a 13-11 lead. From there MU allowed the Wildcats (11-6, 5-2) to score just four more points and won the frame, 25-15. The Golden Eagles hit .407, while holding Villanova to just a .059 clip.
MU took the third set, 25-21, but Villanova claimed the fourth frame, 25-20, to force a decisive fifth set. In the final battle the teams traded points early, until Villanova broke a tie and went ahead, 7-5. After the teams switched sides with the Wildcats leading 8-5, MU scored just four more points in the match, falling 15-9.
Mallory Potts led Villanova with 21 kills, while Allison Fitzgerald collected a match-high 30 digs.
The Golden Eagles travel to Georgetown and will take on the Hoyas Sunday, Oct. 15 at 1 p.m. Central time.
