
Marquette Tops Southern Miss, 3-0

MADISON, WIS. -- The Marquette women's volleyball team concluded non-conference play on Friday night with a win in straight sets, (25-23, 25-21, 25-22) over Southern Miss, at the Badger Classic hosted by the University of Wisconsin.
Sophomore Allie Barber led the Golden Eagles (6-5) with 14 kills, while junior Anna Haak matched a career-high 11 kills and had her first double-double in a Marquette uniform with 10 digs. Martha Konovodoff collected 17 digs, while Manon Geoffroy recorded 11.
Setter Lauren Speckman dished out 41 assists.
The Golden Eagles hit a combined .274 clip as a team, holding Southern Miss (9-4) to .164.
MU and Southern Miss played the first set tight, trading points, but Marquette took a 23-22 lead on a kill from freshman Elizabeth Orf and an attack error from USM finished the frame, 25-23.
After claiming the second set, 25-21, the third frame came down to the wire for MU and was tied 20 all after a miscue from the Golden Eagles. Marquette broke the tie and scored two straight points, including a kill from Orf, for a 23-21 lead. Werch and Orf teamed for a block to give MU set point, 24-22 and Werch found the floor for a kill to claim the match victory.
This was Marquette's fifth three-set match of the season and the squad is 4-1 when this occurs. The Golden Eagles open BIG EAST play on Wednesday, Sept. 20 at Butler. First serve is set for 6 p.m. Central time in Indianapolis.
