
MU Earns a Sweep Over St. John's

MILWAUKEE -- The Marquette women's volleyball team earned its fourth straight sweep with a 3-0 (25-15, 25-18, 25-12) over St. John's on Saturday evening at the Al McGuire Center.
Sophomore Allie Barber led Marquette's attack with 14 kills and a .478 hitting percentage, while junior Anna Haak tallied 11 kills and hit .429. Freshman Elizabeth Orf and redshirt junior Jenna Rosenthal also had stellar hitting nights with a .667 clip and .625 mark, respectively.
Sophomore Lauren Speckman handed out a match-high 39 assists, while Haak and freshman Martha Konovodoff collected nine and eight digs apiece.
The Golden Eagles (9-5, 3-0) hit a stellar .516 clip with just one kill in the first set en route to a 25-15 win and followed with a 25-18 victory in the second frame using a pair of 4-0 runs to help close out the set. Barber and Orf tallied five and four kills, respectively in the set.
Marquette and the Red Storm (8-9, 0-2) played the third set tight early in the contest, but as the Golden Eagles turned a 12-9 advantage into a 19-10 lead capitalizing on multiple errors from St. John's. Freshman Gabbi Martinez entered the set to serve and Haak connected on consecutive kills to extend the lead to 22-11 before a Red Storm attack error gave the Golden Eagles the match win.
MU had an excellent hitting night as the team combined for a .494 hitting percentage, while holding the Red Storm to just .114. The squad also kept St. John's from producing a player with double digit kills as Danisha Moss and Julia Cast each connected on eight kills.
Marquette will have another mid-week match and travel to Xavier for a battle with the Musketeers. First serve is slated for 5 p.m. CT at the Cintas Center.
