MILWAUKEE - The Marquette University men's soccer team relinquished the Milwaukee Cup for the first time since 2013, dropping Tuesday night's match-up at Engelmann Stadium, 2-0, to crosstown foe, UW-Milwaukee.
The Panthers (4-4-2) collected two first-half goals en route to a victory that mirrors the same score the Golden Eagles used to capture the previous outright win in the series back in 2014.
UWM got on the board in the 18th minute on a goal by Reid Stevenson before Nick Moon tacked on another in the 39th.
Despite holding an 11-9 advantage in shots, Marquette had trouble keeping possession and finding a rhythm offensively partly due to the physicality of the match, which is customary in a Milwaukee Cup match.
The teams combined for 35 fouls and six yellow cards, including 20 fouls and five yellows in the second half alone.
Marquette held an impressive 10-1 edge in corner kicks, but was unable to capitalize on any of its set pieces.
Milwaukee improved its record to 29-11-5 all-time in the series with the win.
Marquette returns to action Saturday, Sept. 30, heading to Washington, D.C. to take on the 14th-ranked Georgetown Hoyas in BIG EAST Conference action. Game time is set for 12:05 p.m. Central time and will be streamed live on the BIG EAST Digital Network via FOX Sports GO.
