Track & Field Resumes Competition at the Tierney Classic

MILWAUKEE -- The Marquette University men's and women's track and field teams will reboot and kick off the 2018 New Year with indoor competition at UW-Milwaukee with the John Tierney Classic on Saturday.

The Golden Eagles are set to take on UIC, Loyola-Chicago and host Milwaukee at the Klotsche Center and their newly installed track surface. Field events are slated to begin at 10 a.m. CT with running events to follow at 1 p.m.

Marquette had a tremendous season opener at Notre Dame last month, breaking numerous in the indoor debut. As a team, the Golden Eagles set 45 PRs, 17 all-time marks, claimed four event victories, two school records and a freshman record.

Redshirt senior Joel Swanberg, in his first meet in two seasons, set the school record in the pole vault with a height of 5.00 meters (16-4.75 feet), while senior Cassy Goodrich tied her own school record in the 600 meters with a time of 1:33.01. Additionally, Emma Moravec made quick work of joining the elite ranks in program history by running a freshman record in the 600 meters and fourth-fastest time overall (1:35.27).

Not to go unmentioned was the opening season effort by sophomore Daniel Armstrong, who was named the BIG EAST Field Athlete of the Week after winning the high jump at Notre Dame. His mark of 2.17 meters (7-1.5 feet) was a new personal best and No. 2 in program history. It also ranked at the time as the second-best jump in the nation this season.

Last year, Marquette swept away the competition at the John Tierney Classic, setting multiple school records thanks to Gemma Tedeschi (pole vault) and Goodrich (300 meters).

Following Saturday's action, Marquette will head to Minneapolis to compete in the Jack Johnson Invitational hosted by Minnesota on Friday, Jan. 26.
