Luka Prpa and Luis Barraza earn player of the week status, while Oliver Posarelli was named to the honor roll
MILWAUKEE – Luka Prpa and Luis Barraza highlighted a trio of Golden Eagles to earn BIG EAST weekly accolades after Saturday's convincing 4-0 win over St. John's at Valley Fields, the league office announced on Monday.
Â
Prpa claimed his second-career BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week award after registering a BIG EAST-high four points on a goal and two assists, while Barraza was named BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Week and junior Oliver Posarelli earned recognition for the first time in his career, landing on the weekly honor roll.
Â
Prpa assisted on Josh Coan's eventual game-winner in the 41st minute. He later converted a penalty kick to put Marquette ahead 2-0 in the 65th minute, his first penalty since his freshman season in 2016. He's a perfect 5-for-5 in penalties for his career. The Wind Lake, Wisconsin, native later added an assist on Connor Alba's goal in the 73rd. His four points on the night were the second-most in the BIG EAST this season.
Â
Barraza, who earns weekly distinction for the third-consecutive week, collects his second BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Week honor and third of his career after another impressive performance in net. With six saves, the senior netminder secured his fourth shutout of the season and 10th of his career, while improving his numbers across the board.
Â
The Santa Teresa, New Mexico, native leads the BIG EAST in save percentage (.873) and saves per game (5.33), while ranking second in goals against average (0.75).
Â
Posarelli, a junior transfer from Montana State in his first season with the Golden Eagles, has been an integral part of the back line. Despite injuries that have forced head coach Louis Bennett to move some pieces around on defense, Posarelli has helped solidify the team's play, as evidenced by Saturday's 4-0 shutout in which he aided in shutting down one of the BIG EAST's top scorers, St. John's Matt Forster.
Â
The Verona, Italy, native has appeared in all 12 games this season, which includes eight starts.
Â
Marquette's three-point gain in the league standings has vaulted it into a fourth-place tie with St. John's and this Saturday's opponent, Xavier. The Golden Eagles and Musketeers will meet at Valley Fields for scheduled kickoff of 7:05 p.m. Central time.
