Wetherell is the first MU freshman to earn All-BIG EAST Second Team recognition
NEW YORK – Marquette University freshmen Katrina Wetherell and Alyssa Bombacino earned All-BIG EAST Conference postseason honors, the league announced on Saturday.
Wetherell was named to the All-BIG EAST Second Team and earned mention on the conference's all-freshman team alongside Bombacino.
Starting all 18 matches, Wetherell played the most minutes of any MU midfielder (1,413) and posted a team-high four assists. She also scored once and fired a team-best 18 shots on frame. The Peoria, Arizona native earned all-tournament recognition at the Duke Nike Classic over Labor Day Weekend for her play against then-No. 12 Duke and No. 3 North Carolina. She scored her lone goal of the year at Villanova and posted assists in four separate matches.
Wetherell is the only Marquette freshman to ever earn All-BIG EAST Second Team honors since the Golden Eagles joined the league for the 2005 campaign. Amanda Engel (2012) and Meghan Connelly (2005) each garnered third team honors in addition to all-rookie mention.
Bombacino tied redshirt senior Carrie Madden for the team lead with three goals on the year, two of which came in BIG EAST play. The Naperville, Illinois native scored on three of her six shots this season and was a regular fixture in the starting lineup during league play, starting six of the final seven matches of the campaign.
The last time MU had two BIG EAST All-Freshman Team honorees was 2016 when Maddy Henry and Emily Hess each earned the distinction.
