Patrick Seagrist claimed defensive player of the week honors for the third time this season
Official BIG EAST Release
NEW YORK – Junior defender Patrick Seagrist was named BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week for the third time this season, while junior forward Josh Coan was placed on the honor roll, the league office announced on Monday.
Â
The Golden Eagles are coming off a BIG EAST tournament clinching road victory over Butler on Sunday and both honorees for Marquette played key roles.
Â
Coan connected on his third goal of the season and the eventual game-winner in the 37th minute on Sunday. The Indianapolis native returned to his hometown to lead the Golden Eagle attack with four shots. He tallied six total shots on the week and added an assist in the loss to Creighton on Wednesday. He's tied for third on the team with eight points on three goals and two assists this year.
Â
Seagrist, who assisted on Coan's game-winner, was also instrumental in a second-half defensive effort that proved game-winning worthy.
Â
The Streamwood, Illinois, native led a back line that was forced to protect a one-goal lead with a newly installed freshman goalkeeper, Cedrik Stern, and was a man-down for the final 43 minutes. The defense weathered the 11-shot onslaught that ensued and outlasted Butler to clinch Marquette's first league tournament berth since 2014.
Â
This marked the second-straight defensive player of the week award for Seagrist and third this season. Like Coan, he, too, is tied for third on the squad with three goals and two assists in 2018.
Â
The Golden Eagles close out the regular season with a senior night matchup against rival DePaul on Wednesday, Oct. 31. With a win, Marquette can clinch a BIG EAST tournament first-round home match, which would be played on Saturday, Nov. 3. Â
