The Golden Eagles fell to the Hoyas, who successfully defended their BIG EAST title

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Despite a memorable postseason run, Marquette had its season come to a close today as host Georgetown successfully defended its BIG EAST tournament title and secured the league's automatic berth into the NCAA tournament with a 2-0 win at Shaw Field.

The Hoyas (12-4-3) scored once in each half, including the match-winner off a Brendan McDonough header in the 11th minute and an Achara goal in the 70th. The Golden Eagles had its fair share of chances, netting eight corners and outshooting the Hoyas, 10-9.

Marquette set the tone in the first five minutes with three shots and a corner kick, but Georgetown weathered the storm and created a quality chance in the 11th minute when McDonough headed in a corner inside the left post for the game's first goal and his first goal of the season.

The Hoyas would take that lead into halftime despite allowing six first-half corners to the Golden Eagles (7-9-3).

Their bend-not-break defense would be the story of the second half as well. Marquette had its chances with seven second-half shots, but only a few landed on target and none posing a real danger to Georgetown keeper, Giannis Nikopolidis.

Marquette senior keeper Luis Barraza made two saves in his final collegiate game.

The Golden Eagles put together a strong second half to the season and a memorable postseason run. They went unbeaten in six of their last seven games leading up to the BIG EAST final, including advancing on a pair of exhilarating penalty kick shootouts to get past Xavier and top-seeded Creighton, needing a combined 21 rounds penalties.

They were the first-ever team in BIG EAST tournament action to advance to the final on consecutive penalty kick shootouts.
