Efficient Howard Earns First Weekly Award
Junior guard Markus Howard was named BIG EAST Player of the Week on Monday, marking the third time in his standout career he has captured the accolade.
Howard averaged 26.0 points, 8.0 rebounds and 6.0 assists in a pair of wins at home. In Saturday's 92-59 win against Bethune-Cookman, he poured in 37 points (in just 27 minutes), the most points by a Marquette player at a home game in 12 years. Former sharpshooter Steve Novak scored 41 points in the program's first BIG EAST game in 2005-06, a win over No. 2 UConn at the BMO Harris Bradley Center.
For the Bethune-Cookman contest, Howard shot 7-of-10 from 3-point range and 10-of-11 from the foul line. Earlier in the week, he had 15 points and eight rebounds in a 67-42 win over UMBC.
Howard has now scored 30-or-more points eight times in his career, the most of any player since 1963-64. Both George Thompson (1967-69) and Tony Smith (1987-90) reached the mark seven times in their respective careers.
Howard, Judson Feature Indiana Ties
Junior guard Markus Howard's father, Chuck, was a two-year letterwinner (1983-84) at running back on the Indiana football team and grew up in Indianapolis, Indiana.
Rob Judson, Special Assistant to the Head Coach, spent four seasons at Indiana under former Marquette head coach Tom Crean. He was the Hoosiers' director of basketball operations for two campaigns prior to moving into an assistant coaching position in 2015-16.
Limited Series Includes Notable Games
Marquette is just 2-7 all-time against the Hoosiers, with the first win coming in 1932 at home and the second a 50-49 decision at the Great Alaska Shootout in 2001-02.
Indiana also ended a pair of Marquette postseason runs in the NCAA tournament during the peak of the Al McGuire era. The No. 6 Hoosiers downed No. 5 MU 75-69 in the second round of the tourney in Nashville, Tennessee in 1973 and three years later a top-ranked IU squad defeated No. 2 Marquette 65-56 in the regional championship in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Indiana claimed the title and an undefeated record that season.
