Junior guard earns honor for second time in 2018-19
Marquette University men's basketball player Markus Howard has been named the BIG EAST Player of the Week, the league office announced Monday morning.
Â
The accolade is the second of the season (Nov. 12) and fourth of his career for the junior guard. He also earned the conference's top freshman award on three occasions in 2016-17.
Â
Howard scored 45 points, the second highest single-game point total in Marquette history, in an 83-71 win against No. 12 Kansas State. He shot 11-of-17 from the field and 19-of-21 from the foul line. Howard also scored a team-high 17 points in a 76-55 victory over Charleston Southern. For the two games, he averaged 31.0 points and 4.5 rebounds. For the week, the junior averaged 31.0 points while shooting 51.5 percent from the floor and 90.5 percent from the line.
His free throw total against set the program's single-game record, surpassing the previous mark set by former teammate Andrew Rowsey in 2017-18. Howard scored 26 points in the first half, the second time (Bethune Cookman) this season he has collected that total in just 20 minutes of action.
Â
Howard's 45 points were the most ever by a Marquette player at home and the highest total for a regulation game. The Chandler, Arizona, native netted a MU-best 52 points at Providence in overtime last year.
