Five Golden Eagles scored double-digit points in the victory
MILWAUKEE—The year ends on a high note as the No. 20/16 Marquette women's basketball team opened BIG EAST weekend with a 2-0 record after topping Creighton, 85-67 on Monday afternoon. It is the third straight season that the Golden Eagles have opened league play with a 2-0 mark.
For the first time since the game against Michigan on Dec. 2 Marquette (11-3, 2-0) had five players record double-digits as Natisha Hiedeman led with 16 points. It was a true team effort as multiple players stuffed the stat sheet. Seniors Erika Davenport, Danielle King and Amani Wilborn with sophomore Selena Lott all tallied 15 points, which was a career-high for Lott.
King grabbed eight boards, dished six assists with no turnovers, while Hiedeman also handed out six assists and Lott picked up a career-best six steals in the game. Davenport and redshirt sophomore Lauren Van Kleunen each pulled down seven rebounds leading to an advantage on the boards for MU, 43-30. The Golden Eagles also dished out 22 assists, which is the seventh game this season that they have combined for over 20 assists.
Marquette's defense was clicking once again as the Golden Eagles forced nine turnovers in the first half and scored 13 points, while also working the ball down low for 22 points in the paint. MU shot 51.6 percent (16-for-31) from the floor, including 5-for-8 from long range. At the break Lott had already reached a career-high 12 points tying a career-best five steals.
The Golden Eagles shot 46.2 percent in the game picking up 19 second chance points and 27 on fast break opportunities.
Marquette will be off until Friday, Jan. 4 when the Golden Eagles host league travel partner and 24th-ranked DePaul in a top-25 matchup. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. CT on FS1.
