Marquette Edges ETSU In Home Opener, 4-3

The Marquette University men's tennis team (1-1) picked up its first dual victory of the campaign with a 4-3 decision over ETSU Thursday night at the Helfaer Tennis Stadium.
The Golden Eagles, who began a five-match homestand with the win, return to action Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. vs. Valparaiso.
Marquette opened the match by claiming the doubles point, highlighted by a 6-0 win by junior Alvaro Verdu and sophomore Brett Meyers over the 37th-ranked duo from ETSU.
Trailing 3-2 in singles action, momentum swung in MU's favor thanks to the play of freshman Luis Heredia Gomez. Trailing 2-0 in the third set, he took control of the match and tied the score at 3-3 with a 6-2, 4-6, 6-2 win at the No. 3 spot.
Sophomore Luke Smrek, who claimed the first set 7-6 (10-8), held off ETSU's Juan Lugo in the second set as well to clinch the team victory.
