MILWAUKEE -- Marquette University sophomore high jumper Daniel Armstrong is set to compete at the 2018 NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships in College Station, Texas on Saturday, March 10.
The men's high jump final on Saturday is scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m. Central time. ESPN will provide a live video broadcast set to air beginning at 4 p.m. Central time.
Armstrong recorded a winning jump and a personal-best of 2.20 meters (7-2.5 feet) at the BIG EAST Championships on Feb. 24, which was enough to be ranked among the nation's top-16 and earned him his first trip to the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championship meet.
The sophomore also claimed his second BIG EAST Field Athlete of the Meet honor following his second-straight indoor league title.
The Michigan City, Indiana native is the most recent to join a distinguished and historic list of successful Marquette high jumpers. Wally Ellenson ('16), a four-time All-American, was the last Golden Eagle to qualify for the NCAA Track & Field Championships in 2015, where he placed third.
Fellow Marquette high jumper, Ed Burke, was a two-time AAU All-American in the indoor high jump in 1936 and 1937. At the 1937 meet held at Madison Square Garden in New York City, Burke set the indoor world high jump record with a height of 6 feet, 9.25 inches. He then earned NCAA All-American status in 1938.
Ken Wiesner, who broke the world indoor high jump record on three separate occasions, was a three-time NCAA high jump champion. He won titles in succession from 1944-46, and on his third and final trip to nationals, he successfully cleared a winning height of 6 feet, 8 3/8 inches.
Wiesner's lifetime-best mark was 6 feet, 11 inches. He went on to compete for the United States in the 1952 Summer Olympics in Helsinki, Finland, where he won the silver medal.
