DURHAM, North Carolina - Duke scored 11 unanswered goals to top the Marquette University men's lacrosse team, 17-5, on Friday evening at Koskinen Stadium.
The Golden Eagles (6-6) received a pair of goals from redshirt freshman attackman Griffin Fleming, while Ryan Fazio, Bob Pelton and John Wagner scored MU's other tallies. Marquette, which was outshot 40-35, trailed by just two, 6-4, with 11:49 remaining in the third quarter before the Blue Devils ripped off 11 in a row.
Pelton scored for the second-straight game to pull MU within a pair and MU went scoreless over the next nearly 25 minutes.
Justin Guterding led the Blue Devils (12-2) with eight points on six goals and a pair of assists, while Joe Robertson notched five points on four goals and an assist.
Fleming got the Golden Eagles on the board first with a great move at the left side of the crease on a feed from John Wagner. Fleming's tally came 12:48 mark and was followed by three-straight markers by the Blue Devils, including Guterding's first of the evening.
Fleming scored his second with just 1:19 remaining in the first half off a ball he jumped to snag on the edge of the crease.
The Blue Devils took a 5-3 lead into the intermission, though statistics were nearly even. Marquette held a slim, 22-21, advantage in shots and each squad won 5-of-10 faceoffs.
Junior long-stick midfielder Noah Richard tied a career-best with eight ground balls and added a pair of caused turnovers and an assist.
Last season Marquette fell to Duke, 11-7, in the HEAD Coaches Classic at Valley Fields in the closest final score in series history. Then-senior attackman Joe Dunn led Marquette with two goals and Guterding led Duke with a hat trick.
The Blue Devils own the all-time series 6-0 against the Golden Eagles and are 3-0 against MU in Durham. Head coaches Joe Amplo and John Danowski have a history with one another going back to Amplo's career at Hofstra University. He played under Danowski as an all-conference defenseman and served as his assistant coach after graduating.
Marquette finishes out its regular season slate at BIG EAST Conference-rival Denver on Saturday, April 28.
