Four Golden Eagles record double digit kills in opener
WACO, Texas--For the fifth straight season, the Marquette University volleyball team won its season opener as the Golden Eagles swept Texas State, 3-0 (25-23, 25-17, 25-17) in the opening match of the 2018 Hampton Inn & Suites Baylor Invitational.
Â
Marquette (1-0) boasted a powerful offense with four Golden Eagles in double digit kills led by sophomore Hope Werch with 13 and a strong .478 hitting percentage. Junior Allie Barber added 12 kills, while redshirt senior Jenna Rosenthal and sophomore Elizabeth Orf each recorded 10 kills. Sophomore libero Martha Konovodoff collected 22 digs with senior Anna Haak notching 12.
Â
Setting duties were shared by junior Lauren Speckman and sophomore Sarah Rose as the duo dished out 32 and 16 assists, respectively.
Â
As a team Marquette combined to hit a solid.368 clip as Texas State (0-1) hit at a .221 percentage.
Â
"We started a bit inefficient and I thought Hope (Werch) and Jenna (Rosenthal) did a good job of carrying us through that first set until we got our bearings around us and we finally got going once we got a couple of blocks late," head coach Ryan Theis noted. "All in all it was a very fun first match."
Â
The Golden Eagles play two matches on Saturday, which will conclude the tournament. MU opens the day against a fellow squad receiving votes in the AVCA preseason poll, LSU at 12:30 CT before taking on the host and No. 16 Baylor for the evening match at 7 p.m. CT at the Ferrell Center.
