The Golden Eagles have faced Duke and UNC three times previously in the event
MILWAUKEE – The Marquette University women's soccer team heads south this week for a pair of matches in Durham, North Carolina in the Duke Nike Classic against both No. 12 Duke and No. 3 North Carolina on Thursday, Aug. 30 and Sunday, Sept. 2, respectively.
Each contest will feature a live broadcast by the ACC Network Extra through the WatchESPN application, as well as live statistics courtesy of GoDuke.com. Ryan Craig and Jason Garey will serve as the on-air talent for this weekend's matches, which also includes Marquette's BIG EAST Conference rival Providence facing both the Blue Devils and Tar Heels. Thursday's match will begin at 6 p.m. Central time, while Sunday's tilt is slated for 11 a.m. CT.
MU's last meeting against both squads came in the 2012 Duke Nike Classic, with MU suffering a 4-0 defeat by UNC and a 5-2 loss to Duke. Marquette would go on to finish that campaign unbeaten in its final 17 matches (15-0-2) before ultimately falling at BYU in the NCAA regional semifinals in penalty kicks. MU has met Duke and UNC three times (2002, 2006, 2012) in the event (previously the Duke adidas Classic) and holds a 1-1-1 record against the Blue Devils and is 0-4 against the Tar Heels.
The Golden Eagles (0-2-1) received a pair of goals from All-BIG EAST forward Carrie Madden in their last match at Michigan on Thursday, but the Wolverines scored an 84th minute tally and held on for a 3-2 victory. Madden's goals were Marquette's first of the season and allowed MU to take its first lead, 2-1, in the 51th minute before a pair of late markers from the Wolverines.
Through three matches, Marquette has been out-shot 42-27, while junior goalkeeper Maddy Henry has posted 12 saves in 290 minutes of action. MU started the season with a scoreless draw at Cal Poly on Aug. 16 and fell 2-0 to Wisconsin on Aug. 20 in its home opener.
The Blue Devils (2-1-1), who were picked to finish fourth in the ACC after a 2017 regular season title, began the season with a 2-0 victory over then-No. 23 Ohio State and also own shutouts against Elon, 3-0, and No. 15 Georgetown, 0-0. Duke has only conceded a pair of goals this season, both in a 2-1 loss to Illinois on Aug. 19 in Durham.
The Blue Devils are led by senior forward Kayla McCoy, a MAC Hermann Trophy watch list member, who was an All-ACC First Team selection last season after posting 14 goals and seven assists in 26 matches.
Eighteenth-year head coach Robbie Church, the 2017 Atlantic Coast Conference Coach of the Year, guided Duke to a program-record 23 victories last year, including a perfect 10-0-0 mark in ACC play, and an appearance in the College Cup.
The Tar Heels (3-0-1) own a pair of victories over nationally ranked squads this season and fought to a 1-1 draw with then-No. 21 Texas on Aug. 22. North Carolina downed then-No. 21 UCF, 1-0, in its last match on Sunday with Taylor Otto scoring her second goal of the year for the winner in the 16th minute. She leads the Tar Heels with a pair of goals and five points heading into their Thursday matchup with Providence.
North Carolina, which was picked to win the ACC in the 2018 preseason coaches poll, features a MAC Hermann watch list candidate in senior defender Julia Ashley, a four-year starter and a member of the United States U-23 Women's National Team.
The Tar Heels are led by head coach Anson Dorrance, who is in his 42nd year at UNC overall and has led the Carolina women to 21 NCAA Championships.
Golden Eagles get on the board at Michigan
• After being held scoreless in their first two matches of the season against Cal Poly and Wisconsin, All-BIG EAST forward Carrie Madden helped the Golden Eagles break onto the score sheet with a pair of tallies at Michigan on Aug. 23. Madden's goals snapped a 226:29 scoreless stretch to start the season, though Marquette is still in search of its first win of the campaign.
Milwaukee match rescheduled for Sept. 17
• Due to severe weather in the Milwaukee area, the annual match against the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee was postponed from Sunday, Aug. 26 and will now be contested on Monday, Sept. 17 at Valley Fields at 7 p.m. Central time. Marquette has met local foe Milwaukee 26 times in program history, more than any other opponent over the squad's first 25 seasons of competition. The two teams have meet in each of the last 25 years during the regular season, while Marquette claimed the lone NCAA tournament matchup, 1-0, in 2005 at Valley Fields. MU is 0-2-2 in the last four meetings after going 4-0-1 in the five meetings from 2009-13. Marquette's last victory in the series was a 5-0 win at Milwaukee on Sept. 23, 2013 and the Golden Eagles and Panthers have each won nine matches and played to a total of eight draws. The two teams are also an even 5-5-3 all-time at Marquette.
MADDEN LOOKS FOR ANOTHER STANDOUT CAMPAIGN
• Forward Carrie Madden returns for her fifth season in 2018 looking to become the first player to lead Marquette in points over three consecutive seasons since Maegan Kelly, who did so all four years at MU (2010-13). If Madden leads MU in goals she would be the first MU player to accomplish that feat in three straight seasons since M Club Hall of Famer Kate Gordon (2000-02). She currently tops MU with two goals and four points so far in 2018.
• Madden, who played in a total of one match over her first two seasons on campus, was slowed by quad injury early last season before posting a career-best seven goals and 19 points on her way to All-BIG EAST First Team honors. She led MU with six goals and 17 points in 2016, including four match winners.
• In addition to first team all-league honors in 2017, Madden was a member of the All-BIG EAST Championship Team in each of the last two seasons.
GOLDEN EAGLES AMONG MOST SUCCESSFUL CURRENT BIG EAST TEAMS SINCE 2005
• Since entering the BIG EAST Conference in 2005, Marquette has proven to be among the conference's elite women's soccer programs. The Golden Eagles have accumulated an overall record of 184-73-33 since that time and a mark of 97-26-10 in league action, which includes six regular season conference titles and a pair of tournament championships in 2012 and 2013. MU, which has missed the NCAA tournament just four times since its addition to the league, went a remarkable 39-1-1 in BIG EAST play in the four seasons from 2010-13.
Â
• The Golden Eagles were picked to finish third in the 2018 BIG EAST Conference Coaches' Poll for the third year in a row this season, while forward Carrie Madden earned unanimous All-BIG EAST Preseason Team recognition.
