Barber and Rosenthal each hit double digit kills
ST. LOUIS – The Marquette University volleyball team opened the Marcia E. Hamilton Classic on a strong note taking down Kansas State in a 3-0 (25-22, 25-19, 25-22) sweep on Friday evening at Chaifetz Arena on the campus of Saint Louis University.
Junior Allie Barber led Marquette (3-1) with a match-high 15 kills, while redshirt senior Jenna Rosenthal added 10 kills and hit a stellar .562 in the match. Junior Lauren Speckman dished out 26 assists, while sophomore Sarah Rose handed out 17. Sophomore Martha Konovodoff collected a match-best 15 digs.
"It was good to get the 3-0," head coach Ryan Theis said. "The first time we separated from them (Kansas State) we let them creep back in, I think we got blocked a few too many times in that third set, but I was pretty pleased. We were tough to handle offensively and if we hadn't been blocked a few too many times we would have been really efficient."
The Golden Eagles took the first set, 25-22 and hit a strong .382 in the frame, behind five kills from Barber and four from Rosenthal and continued the stellar hitting in the second set as a .350 clip helped MU to a 25-19 win.
In the third set, the Golden Eagles broke away from the Wildcats with an early lead but allowed Kansas State to come back and pull within two points late, 22-20 before MU claimed the victory.
The Wildcats (2-1) were led by Kylee Zumach with 14 kills as Gloria Mutiri added 13, while K-State finished the day with nine team blocks.
Marquette continues play in the tournament on Saturday, Sept. 1 against Western Kentucky at 10 a.m. CT.
