
Allie Barber Picked as BIG EAST Preseason Player of the Year

Marquette is selected preseason No. 1 in the league’s coaches poll
NEW YORK— Marquette University junior Allie Barber was selected as the 2018 BIG EAST Preseason Player of the Year in a tally by the league's coaches, while the Golden Eagles were picked to finish No. 1 in the league for the first time in program history.
Barber was named to the Preseason All-BIG EAST team, while redshirt senior Jenna Rosenthal and sophomore Hope Werch were also selected. This is the second consecutive season both Barber and Rosenthal have earned preseason honors.
Marquette earned 78 points and six- first place votes to narrowly top reigning BIG EAST Champion Creighton in the league's coaches poll. Head coaches were not allowed vote for their team or their own players. The Bluejays tallied 76 points with four first-place votes for second, while Butler was picked third with 60 points. Rounding out the top five was Villanova with 57 points in fourth and Seton Hall picked fifth with 52 points.
St. John's and Xavier tied for 6th (33 points), while Georgetown (8th), Providence (9th) and DePaul concluded the poll.
Reigning BIG EAST Player of the Year Barber retains her status as the preseason favorite. The junior notched a BIG EAST-best 4.71 kills per set in 2017, while hitting .328 and earning 5.05 points per set for the Golden Eagles. She earned AVCA All-East Coast Region honors in 2017 and was selected as an AVCA Honorable Mention All-American.
Rosenthal capped her junior season tallying 2.55 kills per set, while hitting .330 and putting up 1.07 blocks per set for Marquette. She was a first team All-BIG EAST selection and earned AVCA All-East Coast Region honors in 2017. For the third straight summer Rosenthal joined the USA Volleyball Collegiate National Team.
Werch earns her first spot on the league's preseason squad after being selected as BIG EAST Freshman of the Year for the Golden Eagles. She averaged 2.18 kills per set and collected 2.75 digs in her freshman season.
Marquette opens the 2018 slate on Friday, Aug. 24 at 4 p.m. Central time against Texas State in Waco, Texas before facing a pair of 2017 NCAA Tournament squads in LSU and host Baylor on Saturday, Aug. 25.
