The Golden Eagles compete at site of the 2018 NCAA Championships
MILWAUKEE – The Marquette University men's and women's cross country teams return to action on Friday, Sept. 14, for their second meet of the season at the Badger Classic hosted by Wisconsin.
Â
The Golden Eagles shook off the rust last week at the Vic Godfrey Open at familiar Dannehl National Cross Country Course in Somers.
Â
"The first meet is always a rust buster effort as many of the athletes haven't had a true race effort in several months and I thought that was a little bit the case for us as we get back into race mode," Marquette head coach Mike Nelson said. "We'll make steady improvements as the year goes on and this week is part of that process."
Â
This week, the Golden Eagles will see another familiar venue as they head to Madison to race at the Thomas Zimmer Championship Cross Country Course, the home of the 2018 NCAA Championships. Marquette has made the short trip in nine of the last 10 years.
Â
"Hopefully this isn't the last time we race there this year," Nelson said, referencing the site of the national championships in November. "There's only going to be a few teams racing, but they are some of the best teams in the country. This meet will serve as excellent preparation as we move ahead to some other meets down the road."
Â
The men will race among the likes of Arkansas and host Wisconsin, while the women will be among the same group plus Northwestern.
Â
The women's 6k race is set to begin at 2 p.m. followed by the men's 8k.
Â
A look ahead has the Golden Eagles traveling to the Bluegrass State to compete in the Greater Louisville Classic on Sept. 29.
