Barber led the Golden Eagles’ offense with 16 kills
MILWAUKEE – The Marquette University volleyball team fell short in a quest to upend another top-10 program as the 25th-ranked Golden Eagles fell to No. 3 BYU, 3-1 (25-23, 22-25, 20-25, 14-25) on Saturday evening in the Marquette Invitational.
Sophomore Allie Barber once again led Marquette (6-2) with 16 kills, while senior Anna Haak and sophomore Hope Werch each added nine and senior Jenna Rosenthal totaled five blocks, contributing to eight team blocks for MU.
Junior Lauren Speckman handed out 27 assists along with 14 from sophomore Sarah Rose, while defensively Martha Konovodoff and Haak collected 23 and 11 digs, respectively.
Marquette gave BYU (8-0) tough plays and caught the Cougars off guard in taking set one, 25-23. The Golden Eagles jumped out to a pair of leads in the second frame before the Cougars tied the score 22-22 and finished off the final three points to even the match at one set apiece. There were 11 ties and six lead changes in the third set before BYU grabbed a 25-20 win and took control of the fourth set to win the match.
Roni Jones-Perry led BYU with a match-high 23 kills, while Mary Lake collected 26 assists as the Cougars combined to hit .336 as a team.
The Golden Eagles play their final game of the weekend on Sunday, Sept. 9 when they take on Syracuse at Noon, concluding the Marquette Invitational.
