Barber and Konovodoff earned all-tournament honors
MILWAUKEE –The 25th-ranked Marquette University women's volleyball team closed out the Marquette Invitational with a 3-1 victory over Syracuse (25-17, 19-25, 25-23, 25-15) at the Al McGuire Center on Sunday afternoon.
The Golden Eagles (7-2) came away with a win in the opening set, hitting a collective .480 clip. The second slipped away with a 25-19 loss, and Marquette pulled off a two-point victory in the third set. The Golden Eagles were once trailing 9-8 in the final set but regrouped and used a strong of offensives runs to come out on top with a commanding 10-point victory.
Sophomore Allie Barber led MU with 14 kills and senior Jenna Rosenthal tallied 13 of her own. Sophomore Elizabeth Orf recorded eight kills hitting at a blistering .533 clip, error-free, while adding in four blocks.
Sophomore Martha Konovodoff (14) and senior Anna Haak (13) combined for 27 digs, while junior Lauren Speckman and sophomore Sarah Rose delivered 24 assists and 18 assists, respectively in the victory.
"We had to get stops on No. 11 (Polina Shemanova), she had a great night and is a freshman," head coach Ryan Theis said. "She was terrific, and we finally got some stops on her in the third. The timeouts are typically talking about what we are going to do right, and we look at maybe one offensive advantage that we have to give the team."
Syracuse (2-3) was led by Polina Shemanova with 20 kills and Santita Ebangwese registered 10, while the Orange hit a collective .290 hitting percentage.
Marquette hit well in the match overall and combined for .302 clip, staying over .300 in every set with the exception of a .069 mark in the second frame.
The Golden Eagles closed out the weekend 2-1 on their home court and return to action on Friday, Sept. 14 when they welcome rival and second-ranked Wisconsin to the Al McGuire Center for a 7 p.m. Central time tilt.
