Barber led the Golden Eagles with 11 kills
MILWAUKEE – The sellout crowd produced a loud and energetic atmosphere, but it was not enough as the No. 21 Marquette University women's volleyball team dropped three sets to No. 6 Wisconsin (25-23, 25-14, 25-15) at the Al McGuire Center on Friday evening.
Marquette (7-3) held a two-point advantage in the first set, but the Badgers rattled off five straight points to claim the victory, 25-23. Wisconsin (6-1) took the second frame with ease, 25-14, while hitting at a .500 clip.
Despite MU and UW delivering 13 kills apiece, the final set belonged to the Badgers with a 10-point victory.
Junior Allie Barber led Marquette with 11 kills, backed up by senior Jenna Rosenthal and junior Madeline Mosher with six each. Junior Lauren Speckman dished out 18 assists and sophomore Sarah Rose tallied 11.
Sophomore Martha Konovodoff accumulated 17 digs over the three sets, which was a match high.
The Badgers were led by Madison Duello with 14 kills and a .591 hitting percentage, helping Wisconsin to a .330 clip combined as a team.
"It was great to have the sellout crowd," head coach Ryan Theis said. "I think it says a lot more about the state and volleyball in Wisconsin. I know Wisconsin is averaging huge numbers at this point and our student section has been full for the three top-10 teams we have had in here within a week, so I am proud of that and it means a lot, I just wish we could sustain good play a little bit longer."
The Golden Eagles return to action on Saturday, Sept. 15 at 1 p.m. when the squad hosts Tulsa before closing the weekend against Illinois State at 7 p.m. CT that same day.
