Series With Bulldogs Spans Program History
Â
The all-time series dates back to the 1922-23 campaign and is led by Butler, 22-17, including a season sweep in the home-and-home series in 2017-18.
Â
MU claimed the first-ever meeting, 18-17, on Dec. 16, 1922, only to see the Bulldogs claim the next nine matchups. Marquette also collected a nine-game win streak between 1942 and 1990, with the last two contests during that run coming when both programs were members of the Midwestern Collegiate Conference.
Â
Following Marquette's move to the Great Midwest Conference in 1991-92, the two teams wouldn't meet until Butler beat the Golden Eagles at the buzzer in the opening game of the 2012 Maui Invitational. MU would return the favor in the 2013 NCAA tournament, downing the Bulldogs 74-72 in the closing seconds to earn a trip to the squad's third-straight Sweet 16 appearance.
Â
Marquette hasn't won in Hinkle Fieldhouse since the 1989-90 campaign, including five matchups since Butler joined the BIG EAST Conference in 2014-15.

Winning Ways Lead To Rise Up Rankings
Â
The Golden Eagles are ranked 10th in the Associated Press Top-25 this week and own the ninth position in the USA Today Coaches Poll.
Â
The ranking is the highest for the program since the 2011-12 campaign, when the team finished 27-8 overall and advanced to the Sweet 16 under head coach Buzz Williams. Since the 1977-78 campaign, MU has never been ranked higher than eighth in the nation, which it reached in early March of the 2011-12 season. MU is 25-6 all-time as the nation's 10th-ranked team, most recently downing West Virginia 61-60 on Feb. 24, 2012.
Â
Marquette's latest rise in the rankings comes courtesy of a seven-game winning streak in BIG EAST Play, which the squad hasn't run together since winning seven-in-a-row in 2011-12 as well.
