MILWAUKEE – The Marquette University's women's soccer team battled to a 1-1 draw against the Creighton Bluejays in BIG EAST action on Sunday afternoon at Valley Fields.
"We were looking for three points today to get back in the thick of the race in the BIG EAST," MU assistant coach Ashley Bares said. "We made good second half adjustments that helped us out and we were able to create some offense and tie the game. The team has kept its spirits high and keeps fighting, and that showed in the second half today."
MU goalkeeper Maddy Henry made a game-high seven saves to keep CU at bay after the Bluejays scored their lone goal in the ninth minute of the game.
CU midfielder Ansley Atkinson put her team on the board with her 9th-minute goal after she received a through ball from Ashleigh Cearlock and laced a shot into the top right corner of the net.
The Golden Eagles went into halftime trailing 1-0, but that score would change just a few minutes into the second half.
After being taken down in the box, sophomore midfielder Katrina Wetherell earned a penalty kick and found the back of the net in the 51st minute to tie the game. The goal was her first of the season and second of her career at MU.
"We work on that (penalty kicks) in practice all the time," Wetherell said. "It's all practice and repetition. I just stayed calm and found a good spot to put it."

Neither team could find the net after Wetherell knotted the game early in the second half. The two BIG EAST foes combined for four shots in the two overtime periods, with only one from CU put on frame.
With today's result, MU moves to 3-8-1 (0-2-1) on the year while CU moves to 7-4-1 (1-1-1).
