The Marquette University men's basketball team (1-0, 0-0 BIG EAST) returns to action on Wednesday, Nov. 13 at 8 p.m. CT when the squad hosts Purdue (1-1, 0-0 Big Ten) in a Gavitt Tipoff Games matchup at Fiserv Forum.  FS1 will feature the national television broadcast, with Lisa Byington (play-by-play) and Stephen Bardo (analyst) calling the action.  Following Wednesday's outing, MU will conclude its two-game swing through the Big Ten Conference with a matchup on Sunday, Nov. 17 at rival Wisconsin.  Opening tip is set for 12 p.m. CT from the Kohl Center.
Limited Series Includes Postseason Matchup
While Marquette and Purdue have met just nine times in the all-time series, the matchups do include a memorable NCAA tournament game.
The Boilermakers claimed a 75-73 overtime victory on March 15, 1969 in the NCAA Mideast Regional final courtesy of a buzzer-beating jumper by Rick Mount. Â Marquette had defeated Murray State and No. 7 Kentucky in the tourney, but Al McGuire's squad came up just short in its bid for a first-ever Final Four trip. Â Marquette was led by legendary George Thompson, who scored 28 points in his final collegiate game.
Purdue has claimed each of the nine meetings between the two programs and the series dates back to the 1931-32.  The No. 19 Boilermakers claimed an 86-71 victory on Nov. 19, 2017 in a Gavitt Games matchup at the BMO Harris Bradley Center in the most recent meeting.  Guard Andrew Rowsey led the way with 25 points and Markus Howard chipped in 24 points in 33 minutes of action.
Gavitt Tipoff Games Return For Fifth Year
The Gavitt Tipoff Games is a unique early-season series played between the two conferences and named in honor of Hall of Famer Dave Gavitt, founder of the BIG EAST and basketball visionary.
The series, in its fifth season in 2019, is played in the first full week of college basketball's regular season. Â The annual series, which is played on school home courts, features games between some area opponents as well as some attractive intersectional matchups.
Among the 16 participating schools, 14 played in the postseason last year, including nine in the 2019 NCAA Tournament. Â The nine NCAA participants are: Iowa, Marquette, Michigan, Michigan State, Minnesota, Ohio State, Purdue, Seton Hall and Villanova. Â Ten of the 16 squads won at least 20 games last season.
The Golden Eagles have yet to claim a victory in the series, falling to Iowa, Purdue and Indiana. Â MU didn't participate in 2016-17.
