The Golden Eagles defeat Georgetown, 3-1
MILWAUKEE—Allie Barber's first kill of the night broke the Marquette University volleyball all-time kills record as the Golden Eagles earned a 3-1 (25-11, 20-25, 25-14, 25-17) win over Georgetown on Friday evening.
The victory was the ninth-consecutive win for Marquette (24-3, 14-1) as the squad sits tied at the top of the BIG EAST standings with three regular season matches remaining.
Barber's 22 kills led the Golden Eagles, while Hope Werch and Hannah Vanden Berg each poured in double-doubles, the seventh this season for Werch (11 kills, 12 digs) and first career double-double for Vanden Berg (11 kills, career-high 15 digs).
Lauren Speckman dished out 33 assists, while Martha Konovodoff collected 16 digs.
The Golden Eagles combined to hit at a .385 percentage behind a .474 and .458 clip from Vanden Berg and Werch, respectively, while holding Georgetown (13-16, 3-12) to just a .162 hitting percentage.
In the first set the Golden Eagles handled the Hoyas with ease as the squad combined to hit .444, while holding Georgetown to .000 in set one, but the Hoyas battled and forced errors in the second to win the set, 25-20. MU was back to form winning the third set behind a .417 hitting percentage and fought through to escape a late tie in the fourth set with a series of runs to close out the match.
Elissa Barbosa led the Hoyas with 11 kills as Jessica Cusi collected 14 digs.
UP NEXT: The Golden Eagles welcome Villanova to the Al McGuire Center on Saturday, Nov. 16 at 6 p.m. CT. MU's four seniors will be honored in a pre-match ceremony.
