MU opens play Thursday vs. Davidson at 5:30 p.m. CT
The Marquette University men's basketball team (3-1, 0-0 BIG EAST) returns to action at 5 p.m. CT on Thursday, Nov. 28 when the squad faces Davidson (2-3, 0-0 Atlantic 10) in the opening round of the Orlando Invitational at HP Field House on the Disney campus. ESPN2 or ESPNU will feature the national television broadcast, with Ted Emrich (play-by-play) and Andy Kennedy (analyst) calling the action. Following Thursday's action, Marquette will play either USC or Fairfield based on the results of the opening game.
MU Makes Third Trip To Orlando Invite
Marquette is making its third trip overall to the Orlando Invitational and second under sixth-year head coach Steve Wojciechowski.
In the most recent appearance, the Golden Eagles claimed third place at the event with a 67-59 win over Tennessee in 2014. MU defeated Georgia Tech in its opening game before falling to No. 20 Michigan State in the semifinals. Guard Duane Wilson scored 30 points in the win over the Vols during Wojciechowski's first year as program mentor.
In 2009, Marquette advanced to the title game following wins over Xavier and No. 15 Michigan. Florida State rallied against MU in the championship matchup, earning a narrow 57-56 victory.
Marquette is 4-2 all-time in the event.
Series With Davidson Limited, But Notable
Marquette and Davidson have only met on three occasions (MU leads 2-1), but the most recent win by the Golden Eagles over the Wildcats was one of the most improbable and timely in recent memory.
MU trailed by as many as nine points in the second half and was down by five with just 30 seconds to play in the opening round of the 2013 NCAA tournament in Lexington, Ky. A Davidson turnover led to a layup by guard Vander Blue with one second remaining after a timeout and allowed Marquette to escape with a 59-58 win.
The Golden Eagles claimed a share of the BIG EAST Conference regular season title that season and would advance all the way to the Elite Eight with wins over Davidson, Butler and Miami before falling to Syracuse.
Marquette Continues Defensive Focus
Marquette featured one of the most improved defenses in the country at the conclusion of 2018-19 and that trend has continued early this season.
In four games, opponents are shooting just 36.0 percent from the floor and 32.1 percent from behind the 3-point line. The Golden Eagles have blocked an average of 6.3 shots per game and are out-rebounding teams by nearly six caroms per game.
Through games of Nov. 24, Marquette ranks 15th in the nation in blocks per game (1st in BIG EAST), 18th in defensive rebounds per game (31.3) and 23rd in field goal percentage defense (.360).
Anim, Bailey Rebound In Win Over Robert Morris
In the team's Nov. 17 loss at Wisconsin, senior forward Sacar Anim and sophomore forward Brendan Bailey combined to finish with just three points, all from the free throw line.
The duo rebounded with a strong effort, however, helping lead MU to a come-from-behind win over the Colonials. The forward tandem finished with 24 points on 10-of-18 shooting from the floor and also chipped in 10 rebounds, three assists and a pair of steals.
Bailey's point total (10) marked a season high and was his best since netting 11 points against Georgetown on March 9, 2019.
