NEW YORK – Marquette University senior high jumper Daniel Armstrong is the BIG EAST Conference Men's Field Athlete of the Week, the league announced on Tuesday afternoon. Armstrong won the Blue & Gold Invitational at Notre Dame on Dec. 6 with a jump of 2.16 meters/7-1 feet, a height that tied for the NCAA last weekend along with four other Division I competitors.
It's the sixth time in his MU career that Armstrong has garnered BIG EAST Field Athlete of the Week honors. He took home the award three times last season and twice in 2017-18. His height of 2.16 m/7-1 ft is two inches shy of his personal record, which is currently the No. 2 mark all-time in program history.
Armstrong is looking to build off a 2018-19 season that saw him win the title at the BIG EAST Indoor Championships and take second place at the outdoor finals. He also garnered Second Team All-American honors after placing 14th at the NCAA Indoor Championships last March. The two-time All-America honoree has won five BIG EAST championships (three indoor, two outdoor) in the high jump during his first three years on campus.
Two other Golden Eagles, Julian Wright and Arianna Mansavage, were recognized by the conference for notable performances last weekend. A freshman sprinter, Wright won his collegiate debut in the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.22, which lead the BIG EAST and ranked 66th nationally. Mansavage, a sophomore sprinter out of Jefferson, Wis., placed second in the 400-meter dash at the Blue and Gold Invitational with a time of 56.99. Her time was good for third in the BIG EAST and 31st nationally.
The Golden Eagles resume action on Saturday, Jan. 18 in Milwaukee at the John Tierney Classic. The meet will take place at the Klotsche Center.
