Six MU men's soccer student-athletes honored at team awards ceremony
MILWAUKEE – The Marquette University men's soccer team announced its award winners for the 2019 season, honoring six student-athletes.
The Golden Eagles finished the season 8-9-1, making an appearance at the BIG EAST tournament for the second consecutive season.
Taking home Newcomer of the Year honors was Berwyn, Ill., native Christian Marquez. The true freshman forward played in 17-of-18 games (starting eight) and tied for second on the team in goals (three) and tied for fourth in points (seven). He also earned BIG EAST Freshman of the Week honors after scoring game-winning goals in road wins at Wisconsin (Nov. 24) and Xavier (Nov. 27).
Earning the Scholar-Athlete Award was redshirt sophomore defender Manuel Cukaj. The Mannheim, Germany native holds a 3.894 GPA as a finance and information systems major. He also made the CoSIDA Academic All-District team in 2019 and has been named BIG EAST All-Academic in each of his first two years on campus. On the field, he finished the year with three goals (two game-winners) and one assist in 15 games.
The Most Improved Award went to redshirt freshman goalkeeper Jackson Weyman. He posted a 4-4-1 record in nine starts, saving 33 shots and posting a .702 save percentage. Weyman was named BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Week (Sept. 30) after his performances in two road wins over Wisconsin and Xavier. He earned BIG EAST Freshman of the Week on Sept. 2 after saving six shots in two games on opening weekend of the 2019 season.
The Golden Boot and Players Choice MVP awards went to senior striker Josh Coan for his exceptional efforts throughout the season. He led the team in points (16) goals (6), shots (57) and shots on goal (32) in 18 games. He also tallied four assists, which tied for second best on the team. He was named Third Team All-BIG EAST in addition to earning CoSIDA Academic All-District honors for his work in the classroom.
The MU 'Men of the Year' awards were presented to senior captains Luka Prpa and Patrick Seagrist. Prpa earned his fourth all-conference honor of his career this season after being named Second Team All-BIG EAST. He also finished his career ranked No. 8 all-time in program history in career assists. Prpa is also a two-time CoSIDA Academic All-American and a three-time BIG EAST All-Academic Team selection.
Seagrist earned his second consecutive First Team All-BIG EAST nod after a stellar senior season on the MU back line. He finished second in the conference in assists (seven) while also adding two goals. He joined Connor Alba as one of two Golden Eagles to start in all 18 games this season.
